Asymptote designed the 5 star Yas Island hotel as a landmark symbolizing key influences in traditional Islamic art and Islam craft practices. The Grid Shell, a curvilinear protecting made of steel and glass, gives the hotel’s main feature and holds the most importance in terms of architecture and engineering. The Grid Shell uses an LED lighting system with video feeds transmitted over 5,096 diamond-shaped, pivoting, color-changing LED panels. The shell can be seen from a far distance, presenting the appearance of an atmospheric-like veil to the hotel’s two towers. On the inside, the Grid Shell illustrates the Yas hotel’s modern interiors created by Richardson Sadeki and Jestico Whiles. The lobby showcases a contemporary interpretation, with well-defined private zones supplied by light-weight white latticed walls. As a contrast to the walls, the hotel upholstery is in shades of indigo and deep purple which provides a pure feel thanks to the use of pigmented stains and colors.
